Boundless

Companions

This extra adds ruling around how to handle capable and skilled allies, companions and hirelings traveling alongside your character.

Rules

A Companion is represented by a Pool (2D, 4D, 6D, 8D). A larger Pool means they can contribute more often before they wear down.

A Companion can either assist you or act on their own.

Assist your Check

When the Companion helps you with a risky action, you roll their Pool first. Each Hit adds 1D to your Check, but the Companion Pool shrinks by for every Miss, up to a maximum of 2.

Then you roll your Check with the added dice.

Act on their own

When the companion takes a risky action on their own, you roll their Pool as a Check. Resolve Hits and Misses as normal

After the roll, shrink the companion Pool by 1 for every Miss, up to a maximum loss of 2D.

Exhaustion and recovery

If the companion Pool ever drops to 0D, they are exhausted, distracted, or hurt and their support becomes unreliable. They cannot assist or take meaningful action until they recover.

Full Rest: A week of safety and shelter restores the companion Pool to its original size.
