Boundless

Lantern and Oil

A single hooded lantern guides the company. Its reservoir is measured in dice; as the oil gutters away, so does the protection of its light. Refill it with fresh oil before the shadows swallow everyone whole.

Rules

The crew shares one Lantern represented by a Pool of 6d6. The GM rolls it every 10 real-time minutes during expeditions, using a timer hidden from the players. After each roll, the Lantern Pool shrinks by one die for every Miss, up to a maximum of 2 dice.

When emptied, the Lantern goes dark. Pouring in a fresh flask of oil brings it back to 6d6.

When the Lantern dies and every 5 minutes after, each character makes a Save. On a failure, they’re lost to the dark.

Cadence: If the pace is intense, extend the timer interval or roll the Lantern Pool only between scenes or locations.

Lantern Settings

Lantern shutters and wick height offer three modes. Switching between them takes only a breath.

Wide Open Flame: Adds 1D on most Checks, but up to 3 dice may be removed from the Pool when it is rolled.

Steady Glow: No change.

Pinched Wick: Removes 1D on most Checks, but only 1 die may be removed from the Pool when it is rolled.
