SOLO PLAY

What is solo or GMless play?

GMless or solo play allows you to experience this game on your own. You play your character, and when you would normally consult a GM, you use the oracle to receive your answer. The oracle provides clear yes or no responses, prompts for open-ended questions, and light guidance for pacing. During play, you resolve risky actions using Make a Check and handle threats using Prompt a Save. Use Stamina, Aspects, Items, Pools, and Tracks as normal.

How to Play Solo

Frame a scene, ask a focused question that can be answered with yes or no, judge how likely a yes is, roll on the oracle (see below), read the result, and then move forward. Solo play often benefits from keeping notes as you go. Keep a journal to capture key scenes, questions you asked, and the answers the oracle provided. This helps you track the flow of the story.

The Oracle

Use the oracle when you need to settle a question, reveal new aspects of the world, decide how characters react, or bring an encounter or event into play. Judge the likelihood from the fiction, choose the fitting row, and roll the dice.

  • With 2+ Hits: The answer is yes, and there is a boon.
  • With 1 Hit: The answer is yes, but there is a complication.
  • With 0 Hits: The answer is no, and there is a complication.

Be honest when choosing the likelihood. Base it on fiction, not desire. If the fiction changes, your next question can use a different row.

Scene Pools

To maintain momentum, you can use a Pool for each scene you play. A tense scene might use a 4d6 Pool, whereas more relaxed scenes could use a 6d6 or 8d6 Pool. Roll the Pool after every Make a Check or Prompt a Save. When the Pool is emptied, the scene ends and the story moves in a new direction.
